“Would Be A Brilliant Signing” – Bacary Sagna Backs Arsenal To Snap Up Player United Let Go On A Free Transfer

Soon-to-be free agent Raphael Varane would be a “brilliant signing for Arsenal”, according to former Gunners star Bacary Sagna.

Manchester United have decided to part ways with the World Cup winning centre-back and, asked by CoinPoker whether his fellow Frenchman could still play in the Premier League, Sagna replied:

“I actually think he would be a brilliant signing for Arsenal. Varane would be a perfect fit for the vibe of the club because of his winning mentality and personality. He would get on really well with the players in Arsenal’s squad because he is a great player and a great man.”

“I saw him a couple of days ago at the Champions League final and he was in great spirits. He is a football lover before anything, and he still has that desire and competitiveness to play at the top level for a few more seasons.”

“As an addition to the Arsenal squad, I think he would be perfect. He would be perfect cover for either William Saliba or Gabriel and could step into the team when either of those players needed a rest or if they were to get injured. Arsenal need some more quality in reserve in central defence and Varane would be a wonderful addition.”

Why is Varane leaving United?

The Red Devils did have the option to extend the 31-year-old’s stay for another twelve months but they opted against doing so.

It is believed that the Manchester club were unwilling to continue paying Varane £340,000 a week. Discussions about a pay cut were held but no compromise could be found so he will depart Old Trafford at the end of this month.

Could the centre-back move to Arsenal?

The Gunners are said to be keen on reinforcing their options in the centre of defence. Ben White is now ostensibly a fullback while it is thought that the club are open to selling Jakub Kiwior for the right price.

It is debatable whether a player like Varane would be targeted. His salary combined with his age would suggest it is unlikely. Mikel Arteta’s side have been linked with the likes of Ajax’s Jorrel Hato, Benfica’s Antonio Silva, Sporting Lisbon’s Ousmane Diomande and Barcelona’s Mika Faye who are all at least 10 years younger than the former France international.
