“That’s Good Business” – Andy Cole Names Arsenal Signing As The Best Transfer Of The Summer

Former Manchester United striker Andy Cole thinks Arsenal were smart to bring in Raheem Sterling on loan from Chelsea before the transfer window closed.

Speaking to Betfred, Cole said that he was very surprised that Blues boss Enzo Maresca allowed the England international to leave but he feels it will end up benefiting the Gunners:

“I really do believe that’s good business and like everybody else, I’m astounded that Enzo Maresca came out and said that Raheem wasn’t going to get any minutes under him. It was like Enzo was shooting himself in the foot by saying that.”

“It’s not like his position is solidified because if they go on a bad run, he’ll be out the door as well. Arsenal have done good business by getting Raheem in.”

Sterling adds firepower to Arsenal’s attack

While many fans wouldn’t have chosen to bring in the 29-year-old at the start of the summer, it does make a lot of sense for the Gunners in terms of squad depth.

The club’s pursuit of RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko in June indicates that there was an intention to increase numbers up front, albeit by strengthening Mikel Arteta’s options in the No.9 position. However, with the transfer deadline close to shutting, it appeared no reinforcements would arrive, so the addition of Sterling was very welcome.

There is very little downside to the loan

Another factor to consider is that Sterling is not costing a great deal of money. There is no loan fee to speak of, while it has been reported that the club are paying significantly below half his £325,000 a week salary.

Chelsea were desperate to get him off the club’s books and Arsenal have taken advantage, recruiting a top-class forward who can add goals to their attack and, hopefully, aid their Premier League title challenge.
