Arsenal are weighing up a move for AC Milan winger Rafael Leao, according to reports.
Sporting director Andrea Berta was said to be concentrating his efforts on snapping up Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams.
However, TBRFootball claim that Leao has been identified as an alternative ahead of the summer transfer window.
The Portuguese international does have a sizeable release clause of around €175m (£150m) but there are suggestions that he could be available for roughly half of that figure with his club needing to balance the books with player sales.
Arsenal are not the only Premier League team interested in the forward
Chelsea are known to have a longstanding interest in Leao, having tried to sign him before he extended his contract a couple of years ago.
If the 25-year-old is made available this summer, there is a possibility that the Gunners’ London rivals will enter the fray. They are without Mykhailo Mudryk due to a provisional drugs ban and there are also reports that they are considering sending Jadon Sancho back to Manchester United.
Leao has been praised by his national team coach
Speaking back in November after a 5-1 win over Poland, Portugal boss Roberto Martinez paid tribute to the winger:
“All the great players are scrutinised. Rafael Leao grew a lot at the EUROs, he had a great match against France and I think this game was the one that he’s grown the most.”
“Today he showed who he is, one of the best players in the world one-on-one and when it comes to exploiting spaces. There are not many players in the world who could create that opportunity for the first goal.”
Leao’s performances at club level probably haven’t lived up to what he has produced recently for his international team, but there is no doubt he is one of the best wide forwards on the market.
