Reports suggest that Arsenal is close to making a formal bid for Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino whose preferred destination is the Emirates.
The Gunners have been linked with Merino all summer with Mikel Arteta giving the green light for his club to submit a £26 million bid for the Spaniard.
Valued at around £43 million, the Gunners are looking to land a bargain as Merino is keen on leaving Real Sociedad this summer. Mundo Deportivo is reporting that Merino is awaiting a move by Arsenal.
The 28-year-old has just one year left on his contract but has refused to sign a new deal with Sociedad as he wants his move. The Spaniard is reportedly keen on living in London adding to the rumour mill of an imminent move to Arsenal.
How will Merino fit into Arsenal’s midfield?
Mikel Merino is a more defensive-minded midfielder even though he plays right in the middle of the pitch. The Spaniard would likely fit in front of Declan Rice who will be more of an anchor for Arteta’s side.
Merino is also capable of attacking. He scored five goals and provided three assists last season after making 32 league appearances for Sociedad.
Arsenal looking for a central midfielder
The Gunners are keen on adding more quality in central midfield this summer with Merino being one of several names that have been touted to move to the Emirates.
Free agent Adrien Rabiot is one player Arsenal has also been linked with alongside Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, and Manchester United. He would be even more of a bargain option over Merino as the French international would only need his wages paid.
The Gunners previously linked with Benfica star Joao Neves and Mikel Merino’s Sociedad teammate Martin Zubimendi.
