Arsenal transfer target Mathys Tel rejected a £50m move to Tottenham Hotspur, and has chosen his preferred destination.
The Gunners aim to sign a striker in the January transfer window before Monday’s deadline. They saw a £60m bid rejected by Aston Villa for Ollie Watkins, who has scored 11 goals so far this season for Unai Emery.
Arsenal currently sit second in the Premier League table, six points behind league leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand on the Gunners.
They are looking to add attacking reinforcements, and have been linked to Bayern Munich striker Mathys Tel, who recently rejected a move to rivals Tottenham after a £50m fee was agreed between the two clubs.
However, according to the Athletic, Tel rejected the move to Spurs because he wants to remain at Bayern Munich until the summer transfer window. Reporter David Ornstein said: “he intends to stay at Bayern Munich and reassess his future in the summer, despite agreements being reached for him to join the north London club and interest from a host of others teams.”
Despite that, Manchester United have reportedly made a bid to sign Tel according to Sky Sports in Germany, meaning that Arsenal would have to swoop in late to try and land the 19-year-old ahead of the Red Devils.
Tel has made just 14 appearances for Bayern this season in all competitions, as he is behind Harry Kane in Vincent Kompany’s team at the striker position. The 19-year-old had been previously linked over a move to Manchester United and Chelsea, but now it seems as though they will, alongside Arsenal, have to look elsewhere for a striker.
Who could Arsenal sign instead of Mathys Tel?
The Gunners had a bid rejected for Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins, and were expected to make an improved offer for the England international this month. But following Villa’s sale of Jhon Duran to Al Nassr, a move for Watkins looks less likely.
Arsenal have also been linked to Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic this month, and he could be available due to Juventus’ signing of Randal Kolo Muani.
They have also been linked with RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, who they reportedly had a bid lined up for just last week. Sesko has scored 14 goals in all competitions for the Bundesliga side this season.
