Arsenal are unlikely to make a move for Wolves forward Matheus Cunha this summer as things stand, according to reports.
The Gunners are currently discussing which striker will be their preferred target ahead of the next transfer window.
However, GiveMeSport report that Cunha divides opinion among the club’s decision makers with new sporting director Andrea Berta said to be particularly against a move for the Brazilian.
The Italian is believed to be keen on recruiting a “more traditional striker” and there are doubts over whether Cunha fits the criteria.
Berta has signed the player before
The stance of the club’s sporting director may surprise some. It was reported just a few weeks ago that Berta’s appointment would increase the chances of Cunha moving to the Emirates.
He had recruited him during his time at Atletico Madrid, and while he did offload Cunha to Wolves, it was thought that he remained a fan of the forward’s talents.
However, it seems as though Cunha’s versatility and ability to play multiple roles may count against him, in addition to his poor work rate off the ball.
Arsenal will continue monitoring Cunha
While the 25-year-old is not currently top of the club’s shortlist of striker options, it is said that his performances will be watched between now and the end of the season.
Cunha’s £62.5m release clause could yet tempt the club into making a move for him, especially if he shows signs of improving the weaknesses in his game.
At the moment, though, the chances of the Brazilian international wearing the Gunners shirt next campaign have diminished significantly. Other names, such as Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres, now appear more likely targets.
