Club ‘May Find It Hard To Say No’ To Arsenal As Gunners Plot £41M Swoop For Striker Who Has 11 Goals In 12 Games

Arsenal are weighing up a move for Atalanta’s in-form striker Mateo Retegui, according to Caught Offside.

The website claims that the Argentinian-born Italian international has been identified as a “Plan B” for the Gunners with the club unable to land their top targets, such as RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, due to price.

Retegui only moved to Atalanta from Genoa for €22m back in August but there is a feeling that his team would be tempted to sell if they receive the right offer.

Caught Offside report that the Serie A club “may find it hard to say no” if Mikel Arteta‘s side tabled a bid of around €50m (£41m).

Arsenal saw the forward up close earlier this season

Retegui started against the Gunners in the Champions League during the 0-0 draw back in September. The 25-year-old did not get on the scoresheet that day but he has been extremely prolific in domestic fixtures.

Since joining Atalanta, the Italian has hit the back of the net 11 times in 12 league matches, with his last goal coming against league leaders Napoli at the start of this month.

Retegui would add more firepower up front

There is no disputing the fact that Arteta is lacking goals in his forward line. So far this campaign, the likes of Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, Leandro Trossard, Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling have managed to score just 18 between them; 7 of which have been scored by Havertz.

If Arsenal are to mount a title challenge, they may need extra firepower so it will be interesting to see whether they do pursue someone like Retegui during the January transfer window. Based on his excellent form, he could come in and have an instant impact on results.
