Arsenal are in pole position to sign Sevilla midfielder Lucien Agoume, according to reports in the Spanish media.
The Frenchman caught the eye during Sevilla’s shock 4-1 win over La Liga champions Barcelona last weekend.
Agoume’s dynamic display in the middle of the park played a pivotal role in locking down one of Barca’s most creative players, Pedri.
Vamos Mi Sevilla report that the 23-year-old could get himself a move away from the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium in January if he can maintain his current form.
They claim that the Gunners are currently the “main candidate” to snap up Agoume when the transfer window reopens next year.
Arsenal are one of several suitors
Mikel Arteta’s side have been regularly linked with a bid for Agoume since the start of last summer, but other teams are also believed to be in the mix.
Borussia Dortmund were mentioned as an alternative destination last month, while both Manchester United and Tottenham have also been credited with an interest in the player.
Sevilla are expected to listen to offers for Agoume despite the fact that he is a key starter for the Spanish side. The club are currently in financial difficulties.
Agoume is unlikely to be a top target for Arteta
Arsenal are not exactly short of numbers in midfield. The likes of Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard were brought in to replace Jorginho and Thomas Partey at the start of this season.
Arteta can also call upon Declan Rice, Mikel Merino, Eberechi Eze, Martin Odegaard and Ethan Nwaneri to play in central areas if required.
Agoume is much more defensively-minded than most of those options, but even so, it isn’t an area of the field that is expected to be prioritised for strengthening in January.
