Arsenal are serious about signing Levante striker Karl Etta Eyong when the transfer window reopens in January, according to reports in Spain.
Catalan publication Sport claim that the Gunners are the club who are “most interested” in snapping up the 22-year-old.
They suggest that Mikel Arteta‘s side want to “sign” Etta Eyong and then loan him back to Levante for the rest of the season.
Such a deal would likely require them to match the forward’s reported release clause, which stands at €40m (£35m) for foreign teams.
Several clubs want Etta Eyong
The Cameroon international has gained plenty of admirers since joining Levante from Villarreal in the summer.
In addition to Arsenal, the likes of Manchester City and Manchester United have been credited with an interest in Etta Eyong, but the biggest threat is expected to come from Barcelona.
The La Liga champions are looking to replace Robert Lewandowski, who is expected to leave the Camp Nou when his contract expires in June.
Etta Eyong is one of Barca’s top targets. Not only has he impressed them with his goal return this campaign (6 goals in 12 matches), but Spanish teams can sign him for €30m (£26m) due to the conditions of the player’s release clause.
Berta is likely to be spearheading Arsenal’s pursuit
Some may question why the Gunners need another No.9, considering the club already have Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus in the first-team squad.
However, Jesus is not expected to stay at the Emirates for the long term, and if the Brazilian does depart next summer, sporting director Andrea Berta won’t want to be caught short.
He knows the Spanish market well, and he’s already proven that he has an eye for talent after signing Cristhian Mosquera from Valencia, so Etta Eyong is likely someone he is keeping an eye on too.
