Arsenal have “held talks” with the representatives of Manchester City forward Julian Alvarez, according to HITC Football.
The Gunners have contacted the Argentinian international’s agents to ascertain whether he would be interested in a switch to the Emirates Stadium.
Alvarez is weighing up his options. Despite playing regularly for City, he is keen to have a more important role, after being left out for some key fixtures (including both legs of the Champions League tie against Real Madrid) last season.
While his club have told him that he won’t be sold, HITC report that the striker has “made it clear” that he is not happy about his game time and he will consider offers from other teams.
Arsenal will face fierce competition for the player
It has already been confirmed by journalist Fabrizio Romano that both Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain have been in discussions with Alvarez’s agent.
HITC say that Chelsea and teams in the Saudi Pro League will also consider firming up their interest in the 24-year-old if he tries to force a move away from City before the transfer window closes.
Alvarez’s asking price may be an issue
Even though City have told Alvarez that they want him to stay at the Etihad, reports have suggested that a price tag has been slapped on the forward. The Premier League champions are expected to demand at least €70m (£60m) upfront, with another €20m (£17m) in performance-related add-ons.
That is not a fee that Arsenal can currently afford. However, that could change if they manage to offload Eddie Nketiah over the coming days. The 25-year-old has agreed personal terms with Marseille but there is still some haggling to be done over the price.
Marseille’s last bid was reportedly worth €27m (£23m) but the Gunners are hoping to get €35m (£30m) plus add-ons. If a compromise can be found, that money could help fund a move for Alvarez.
