‘Strong Interest’ – Report Claims Arsenal Are Pondering Raid For TWO Argentinian Stars Playing At The Olympics

Arsenal hold a “strong interest” in Boca Juniors midfielder Ezequiel Fernandez and they are hoping to pair him with Manchester City’s Julian Alvarez, according to El Crack Deportivo.

The Argentinian website claims that the Gunners are keeping close tabs on the pair, who are currently playing for their country at the Olympics.

Manager Mikel Arteta is looking to bring in a midfielder before the transfer window shuts on August 30th. However, it was widely believed that the top target would be Real Sociedad’s Mikel Merino.

The Spaniard is in the final year of his contract but he could still cost around €30m (£25m). In contrast, El Crack Deportivo reports that Boca Juniors want just $17m (£13m) for Fernandez – his release clause.

Al-Qadisiah have already tabled a $20m (£15.5m) proposal but Boca want the money upfront, which the Saudi Arabian club were unprepared to do.

Fernandez is a No.6

If Arsenal do decide to pursue the Argentinian international instead, it would suggest that Arteta wants to move Declan Rice into a more advanced midfield position on a permanent basis.

Fernandez is a traditional holding midfield player and, if Rice plays in the N0.8 role, the new recruit could be his partner in the middle of the park.

What is the situation with Arsenal and Alvarez?

The forward has spoken out about his future over the last couple of days, stating that, while he is happy at Manchester City, he would like to play a more important role:

“Last season I was one of the players who played the most minutes in the team. But it’s true: in the end, in some important games, it’s not pleasant to be left out. I will have time to consider my decision. I haven’t stopped to think things through calmly. Once the Olympic Games are over, I will take the time to reflect on what I want for myself.”

If Alvarez decides to leave City, Arsenal will not be the only team pursuing his signature. Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid have also been heavily linked with the striker.
