Arsenal legend Ian Wright says his former club may need to make up to four signings to ensure they can compete for the Premier League and Champions League next season.
Speaking after the Gunners lost to Paris Saint-Germain, Wright called on the club to make the necessary improvements to the squad over the summer:
“We literally couldn’t bring anyone off the bench to help that game in the semi-final of a Champions League.”
“That is the only thing that I will point a finger at in respects of the recruitment and this is why I’m hoping that Andrea Berta has got his book out and he’s ready to go because we are three or four players away from winning the league and winning the Champions League.”
The 4 positions that Arsenal will look to strengthen
Wright is bang on the money in terms of the number of players that the Gunners are likely to bring in over the coming months.
A replacement for the outgoing Jorginho is required; a backup goalkeeper will be needed when Neto returns to Bournemouth following his loan spell.
More importantly, though, the club need to reinforce the forward line with a new striker and a left winger expected to be signed.
Which players will the Gunners target?
It appears one signing is already in the bag with Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi. In terms of the other positions, Espanyol’s Joan Garcia is the favourite if Mikel Arteta’s side do sign a goalkeeper.
Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres and Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams would probably be the top two choices to strengthen up front.
Of course, you can’t rule out signings in other positions. A centre-back may be needed depending on what happens with William Saliba and Gabriel but, for now, at least 4 new additions are anticipated.
