Arsenal Target £69M Portuguese Ace Who Scored From The Halfway Line Against Them Last Season

Arsenal are considering whether to make a move for Sporting Lisbon winger Pedro Goncalves, according to journalist Ekrem Konur.

The Portuguese international, who scored from the halfway line at the Emirates in the Europa League back in March, is believed to be a transfer target for the Gunners, along with Aston Villa and Tottenham:

Goncalves had another great season for Sporting, scoring 20 goals and providing 15 assists in 51 appearances, so he would certainly add firepower to Arsenal’s attack if he were to move to the London club.

The 24-year-old is unlikely to be available on the cheap, though, with the player having an €80m (£69m) release clause. Whether Sporting would accept an offer below that amount, it remains to be seen.

Are Arsenal in the market for a winger?

While Goncalves has played most of his games this season on the left flank, he can play in multiple positions, having also been deployed as a right winger, a no.10, a no.8 and even as a holding midfielder by manager Ruben Amorim.

That flexibility means he would be an outstanding utility player for Mikel Arteta, who could do with more depth in forward areas.

While Arsenal don’t necessarily need a winger, Goncalves could provide cover for the likes of Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka, whilst also being an option to play in Martin Odegaard’s and Granit Xhaka‘s positions.

Vieira’s future at Arsenal

If the Gunners do make a concerted effort to sign Goncalves, it would raise questions about Fabio Vieira and his future at the Emirates.

The 23-year-old has struggled since arriving from Porto last year and, considering Goncalves plays in a similar position, it may suggest that Vieira’s days are numbered.
