Former Arsenal winger Jermaine Pennant has said that Arsenal need to prioritise signing a striker in January.
The Gunners are fully embroiled in the Premier League title fight as they currently sit third in the league, level on points with Chelsea.
Both sides are seven points off league leaders Liverpool as Arsenal were able to close the gap slightly following their 2-0 win against rivals Manchester United.
Arsenal’s top scorers so far this season are Bukayo Saka and Kai Havertz who both have five goals, however, Pennant thinks that they should sign a striker in January even though he was full of praise for Havertz.
Pennant told GoonerNews alongside Mega Dice: “At the start of this season, everyone was talking about
that they need a striker. Then, all of a sudden Havertz turned into prime Van Persie.
“But that’s the thing with Havertz. You’re not going to get that for a full season. You’ll get it in small doses and there’ll be times where you need some form of goal threat, you need your number nine to step up as well.
“And I think having another number nine in the ranks may help that for sure or even a better one. I think it’s something they need to start prioritising now. I think everywhere else on the pitch, they kind have got [it] covered.”
Gabriel Jesus’ struggles for Arsenal this season
Arsenal’s current number nine is Brazilian and former Manchester City player Gabriel Jesus who has really struggled to his the heights that he did at City.
Jesus has so far this season made 11 Premier League appearances, but has started just one game and is yet to score a goal or provide an assist this season for the Gunners.
The attacker hasn’t stepped up in the striker role which is why the Gunners have been linked to several strikers including Alexander Isak, Viktor Gyokeres and Mateo Retegui.
