Arsenal’s chances of signing Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen have been given a “significant boost”, according to reports.
It is believed that at least 5 Premier League clubs have held talks with the representatives of the 19-year-old (who has a £50m release clause in his contract).
One of those teams is said to be Chelsea but EPL Index claim that the Blues are “on the brink” of dropping out of the race for Huijsen.
The centre-back is reportedly not interested in signing a lengthy contract, which he would need to do if he makes the switch to Stamford Bridge. Players usually put pen to paper on 7 or even 8-year deals with the Blues.
Huijsen is also a very ambitious player and, with Enzo Maresca’s side not guaranteed to be playing Champions League football next season, he would prefer to join a team who are challenging for honours on all fronts.
Which clubs are still in the running to buy Huijsen?
In addition to the Gunners, EPL Index report that Liverpool are also in a “strong” position to snap up the Spanish international.
There is interest from Tottenham and Newcastle, although they would likely have more trouble convincing Huijsen, especially Spurs who find themselves sitting 15th in the Premier League table.
Can Arsenal offer the centre-half the game time he needs?
Considering how consistent they have been over the past three seasons, you can’t see manager Mikel Arteta being willing to break up the partnership of William Saliba and Gabriel.
That would present problems in terms of convincing Huijsen to make the switch to the Emirates. Selling a player like Jakub Kiwior could show the defender that there is room for him in the first-team squad.
However, the question is, will he go elsewhere if he believes that he won’t get minutes ahead of Saliba and Gabriel? It will be down to Arteta and sporting director Andre Berta to persuade him that he will play on a regular basis.
