David Raya has raised doubts over whether he will join Arsenal on a permanent basis this summer.

It has been widely assumed that the Spaniard will seal a permanent move from Brentford at the beginning of next month but, asked whether he was open to a transfer to Spain, Raya replied:

“As I have never played in the Spanish league, then, returning would not be returning. Coming home, at some point, yes. I don’t close any doors. Right now, I am very happy in the Premier. Let’s see what happens this year, if I stay at Arsenal or not. You have to wait and see.”

“It has been a good campaign with Arsenal, and it is a shame that we have not been able to win the title. (Manchester) City have made it very difficult for us. I am very happy with the campaign, and I hope to be able to continue there next year.”

What is the situation with Raya?

The 28-year-old was poised to join the Gunners permanently last summer but issues with Financial Fair Play meant that the London club had to renegotiate their agreement with the keeper‘s club Brentford.

Raya subsequently made the move to the Emirates on loan last August (with £3m being paid up front). Mikel Arteta’s side do have an option to buy him for £27m but, based on the Spanish international’s comments, it hasn’t been officially triggered yet.

Will Raya join Arsenal?

Despite the shot-stopper’s remarks, respected journalist Fabrizio Romano has recently reported that the Gunners will trigger their purchase clause.

It would be a shock if Raya’s permanent move to the club isn’t announced over the next couple of weeks. If it doesn’t happen, it would suggest that Arsenal have more problems with Financial Fair Play than initially believed.
