Former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas has said that Arsenal should sign Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres.
The Gunners aren’t done with their season just yet, as they still have hopes of winning the Champions League after going 3-0 up against Real Madrid in their quarter-final tie.
However, in the Premier League, the season is all but over as they are 11 points behind Liverpool, so Mikel Arteta is already thinking about how he will improve his team for next season.
The Arsenal boss has said that Arsenal will have a “big” transfer window, with one position they are expected to improve is the striker. Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus both suffered injuries this season which has forced Arteta to play Mikel Merino up front.
Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres has emerged as a top target for Arsenal this summer, and former Gunner Cesc Fabregas believes that he would be ideal as a signing at the Emirates.
He told Amazon Prime: “I’m not inside to know their thoughts but, definitely, I would say a striker, a top, top striker, that can bang in 40 to 50 goals like all the top teams.” Pressed on whether Gyokeres could be that man for Arsenal, Fabregas replied: “Yeah, he could be an option, 100 per cent.
“He is an extraordinary striker. He is a focused player, who pays attention to details, he is competitive, never lets his guard down, and doesn’t want to rest. He is as an athlete, a player and team-mate who instils confidence in his team-mates with what he gives to the team.”
Arsenal are currently the front-runners to sign Gyokeres this summer after their appointment of Sporting Director Andrea Berta.
Arsenal striker could return before end of the season
Kai Havertz has been out injured since February, when he suffered a seemingly season ending injury, however, a recent update suggests that he has developed quickly in his recovery.
In the most recent Arsenal injury news, it has been revealed that Havertz could come back before the end of the season, which could be useful for Arteta if the Gunners manage to stay in the Champions League deep into the competition.
Journalist David Ornstein said: “It looks and sounds like his recovery is going well, so perhaps they’ll try to reintegrate him before the season finishes if it is safe to do so and there is something to play for. But let’s see – a lot of ‘ifs’ in that!”
