Arsenal are weighing up a move for Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni, according to FootballTransfers.com.

The Frenchman only made the switch to the La Liga club last summer for a fee that could reach €100m (£86m) but he did not have the best first season at the Bernabeu and there is already speculation that he could leave Spain.

It is believed that Tchouameni is not the London club’s primary target to strengthen the midfield after Declan Rice but there is a situation where a bid could be made for the player.

FootballTransfers report that, if the Gunners do miss out on both Brighton’s Moises Caicedo and Southampton’s Romeo Lavia then they may “test the waters” with an approach for Tchouameni.

Would Real be open to selling Tchouameni?

The 23-year-old is Real’s only holding midfielder and it’s unlikely that the Spanish side would consider offloading the player, unless they need to raise funds for other transfers.

PSG’s Kylian Mbappe is a long-term target for the club and, if he does become available for a reasonable price this summer, Real could sacrifice Tchouameni.

Do Arsenal have competition for Tchouameni’s signature?

Before the France international joined Real last year, both Liverpool and Chelsea were heavily linked with the player, and there is an expectation that they would re-enter the race for the midfielder if he is put on the market again.

In fact, earlier this month, a report in the Catalan media had suggested that Chelsea had already tabled a bid for Tchouameni, but the claim was not backed up by other sources, either in Spain or England.

It should also be pointed out that Arsenal may only have the funds to sign the former Monaco player if and when they offload Thomas Partey. The Ghanaian has been linked with moves to Saudi Arabia and Serie A side Juventus.
