Journalist Fabrizio Romano has played down reports that Arsenal made an enquiry for Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon before the transfer window closed.
Writing in his Daily Briefing column, Romano said that it was unlikely that the Gunners would have made a serious approach for the England international due to the cost involved:
“I’m aware there have been some claims made about Arsenal enquiring about Anthony Gordon, but I wanted to clarify my understanding around the Newcastle winger here.”
“As I reported previously, Liverpool were the club in talks to sign Gordon in June. I don’t have any concrete info on Arsenal also because they never really planned to spend crazy money on a winger this summer. Liverpool wanted him in June but then he was too expensive. That’s all we can say for now.”
Gordon was valued at £70m back in June
As Romano mentions, Liverpool made an attempt to secure the former Everton player’s signature earlier this summer.
It is believed that the Magpies were willing to accept an offer of £25m plus Joe Gomez (whose value in the deal was said to be £45m). It means Gordon’s valuation was effectively £70m; a fee that Arsenal wouldn’t have been in a position to pay; especially after shelling out £42m on Riccardo Calafiori.
Arsenal ultimately settled on a cheaper alternative
Whether the Gunners did or did not make an enquiry for Gordon, the result was that they decided to sign a different player. Raheem Sterling was snapped up on a season-long loan from Chelsea on deadline day.
There is no option to buy the 29-year-old in the agreement, though, so he could well return to Stamford Bridge next summer. That would suggest that Mikel Arteta’s side may soon be in the market for another winger again. It remains to be seen if they will revive their reported interest in Gordon.
