Fabrizio Romano Addresses Claims That Arsenal Are Targeting £45M England International

Arsenal do not hold an active interest in Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

When asked by GiveMeSport whether the Gunners or Liverpool could make a move for the England international, Romano replied:

“Many clubs admire Gordon but there’s nothing at all ongoing now, full focus on Newcastle. 100%.”

Arsenal have been credited with an interest in Gordon in the past, with another respected journalist, David Ornstein, having said back in January that Mikel Arteta’s side have a “huge admiration” for the player.

However, a lot has happened since then. The Gunners have spent significant amounts on new signings, including £67.5m on Eberechi Eze and another £63.5m on Viktor Gyokeres.

Martinelli’s form suggests Arsenal won’t pursue Gordon

The Newcastle winger is at his best when he plays off the left flank, so he would be regarded as a replacement for either Gabriel Martinelli or Leandro Trossard.

There have been doubts about Martinelli following an extended period where his development has stagnated but he seems to have turned a corner this season.

Despite making just 4 starts in all competitions, the Brazilian international has scored 3 goals and provided 1 assist.

The Newcastle forward would cost a lot of money

If sporting director Andrea Berta is looking at Gordon as a potential contender to replace Trossard, with the Belgian likely to leave the Emirates next summer, then a lot will hinge on his price tag.

The Magpies paid Everton £45m for the 23-year-old in January 2023, and he subsequently signed a new long-term contract back in October last year to protect his value.

For that reason, there is no chance that Gordon will be available on the cheap, so a decision will have to be made on whether he is worth the outlay.
