David Ornstein Claims Arsenal Have “Huge Admiration” For Newcastle Ace (And It’s Not Alexander Isak)

Arsenal are big fans of Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon, according to The Athletic reporter David Ornstein.

The Magpies need to raise money in order to fund new signings and, while they would be reluctant to sell Gordon, Ornstein says he would have plenty of suitors, including the Gunners:

“I don’t think he’d be one they’d like to lose, but I do hear of clubs who have a huge admiration for him, even Arsenal among them like Anthony Gordon.”

A transfer this month does look unlikely, considering manager Mikel Arteta is keen on recruiting a striker, rather than a winger, but it could be a deal that is revisited in the summer.

Gordon came close to leaving St James’ Park last year

Liverpool are said to have made a move for the England international in June 2024, with Newcastle needing to raise funds to avoid breaking the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules.

Gordon would have joined the Reds with either Joe Gomez or Jarell Quansah reportedly moving in the other direction. However, the transfer collapsed, with the Magpies deciding to sell Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh instead.

Back in October, Gordon signed a new long-term deal to keep him at St James’ Park, ending speculation about his future but it appears that Arsenal are still keeping tabs on him.

Arsenal need competition for Martinelli

Gabriel Martinelli‘s form over the last 18 months has been very concerning. Since the start of last season, he has found the net just 15 times in 74 appearances.

While Leandro Trossard does provide effective cover, he is not a long-term solution. The Belgian has just turned 30 and his contract at the Emirates expires in 2026.

It is, therefore, not a surprise that the Gunners are looking to freshen things up on the left flank. Gordon is likely on the shortlist along with Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams.
