Arsenal legend Ian Wright says he would like his former club to “buy” Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman.
The 27-year-old scored 20 goals and registered 7 assists in 40 appearances last season and Wright claims that the player would relish a return to English football, where he could help the Gunners secure top spot.
“I hope we can buy him, Arsenal. I would love someone like him to come back to the Premier League and say, ‘listen, I have unfinished business here so I am going to help Arsenal win the league’. But I just admire his journey and now he’s recognised rightly as a top player, unbelievable.”
It is believed that Atalanta are open to selling Lookman this summer, with €45m (£38m) likely to be enough to secure his signature.
Lookman has been linked with a switch to the Emirates
Reports in Italy at the end of last month did suggest that Mikel Arteta’s side were weighing up a move for the African Footballer of the Year.
Lookman has been touted as a potential alternative for Rodrygo if the Brazilian international decides to stay at Real Madrid.
Arsenal have held talks with other wingers
As Lookman can play as either a number ten or out wide, it’s likely that he has been considered by the Gunners as an option for the left flank.
Arteta and Sporting director Andrea Berta are said to be looking at several options for that position. In addition to Rodrygo, Nico Williams has been discussed but there are now suggestions that he could sign a contract extension with Athletic Bilbao instead.
Talks with Leroy Sane have also been held, with the Bayern Munich star potentially available on a free transfer next month. The German is a similar age to Lookman and would cost a lot less.
