Arsenal Tracking New Goalkeeper For Next Season

Arsenal’s goalkeeping woes have resurfaced this season due to the inconsistent form shown by Wenger’s number one keeper, Szczesny. The Pole became Wenger’s first choice keeper during the second half of the 2010-11 season, when injuries to Fabianski and Manuel Almunia meant that the 23-year-old had to be drafted in between the sticks.

The Poland international had an excellent 2011-12 season and it was thought that Arsenal had finally found a stable and reliable ‘keeper’ since the days of Jens Lehmann. However, Szczesny has failed to replicate that form this campaign, and was subsequently dropped from the starting eleven, midway to the season.

His replacement, Fabianski, has shown commendable form, but Wenger does not view him as a permanent and long-term solution at Arsenal. Instead, the Frenchman wants to dip in the transfer market and buy a new goalkeeper to make the Gunners more secure at the back.

According to Dailymail, Arsenal are keeping tabs on Stuttgart goalkeeper Sven Ulreich and are keen on bringing him to the Emirates next season. Wenger had sent scouts to Germany last month to see the 24-year-old in action, when Stuttgart beat Freiburg 2-1.

Ever since Szczesny was dropped for one of the most important matches of this season, away to Bayern Munich in the Champions League round of 16 stage, there have been reports suggesting that Wenger no longer has faith in Szczesny and is considering selling him.

The report suggests that Wenger has eyed a long-list of goalkeepers including the likes of Pepe Reina, Victor Valdes, Asmir Begovic, Rene Adler, Simon Mignolet and QPR’s Julio Cesar, whom Harry Redknapp expects to move on once the season concludes.

However, it seems that Arsenal might be more interested in making a move for Ulreich, who is a former U-21 Germany international. The stopper has a contract until 2017 at the German outfit, but with the club languishing in mid-table in the Bundesliga, they may find it hard to keep hold of their player if Arsenal show concrete interest.
