Arsenal Target Barcelona Defender

The 22-year-old plays second fiddle to Dani Alves at Nou Camp, who has been established as the first-choice right-back since quite a few years. Montoya, who has two Catalunya international caps to his name, featured in just 15 league appearances last season and scored a solitary goal as Barca romped to the La Liga title.

According to Metro, Montoya is not happy with his situation at the club and has admitted his desire to leave since he is unable to usurp Alves as the first-choice right-back at the club. The defender believes he will get more opportunities if he moves on, and may very well be sold even though he is highly regarded at the club.

The report suggests that Arsenal are lining up a January move for the full-back, with Wenger realising the need to strengthen his thin squad. He has already said that his squad his short in numbers, and a lot of transfer activity can be expected after Arsenal bought in just three players this summer, including the record-breaking signing of Mesut Ozil for £42.4 million.

Bacary Sagna is the current number one right-back at the club, although the position is being occupied this season by Carl Jenkinson as Sagna has been shifted to centre-back in order to cope with the high number of injuries within the Arsenal squad.

The Frenchman’s contract expires at the end of the current season and although talks are reportedly on going between the club and the player, Wenger is determined to bring in another right-sided player at the club, and has identified Montoya who will be available for a cut-price £3 million.

Montoya is in the final year of his contract and is reportedly looking at his options as he seeks to run down his contract. With Arsenal’s style similar to that of Barca, and Wenger’s determination to acquire him, Montoya may well be an Arsenal player come January.
