Arsenal Supporters Trust Say Match Day Experience Is Being Ruined By VAR

The Arsenal Supporters Trust (AST) have asked for improvements to be made to how VAR decisions are communicated to fans inside the stadium.

The Gunners were on the wrong end of two important decisions in the 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace on Sunday, with a penalty given to the Eagles for a foul on Wilfried Zaha, and Sokratis’s winning goal having been ruled out.

Following the incidents, AST issued a statement saying that there is a lack of communication to supporters when VAR decisions are being made, leaving it very hard to ascertain what is going on:

“We explained that many of our members have given us feedback that they feel treated like second class supporters when a VAR review takes place. To date no VAR review at the Emirates has been shown on the big screens including after two reversals of decisions in the game versus Crystal Palace on Sunday.”

“It was the unanimous view of the supporter groups in the meeting room that whatever system of VAR is applied that the match going fan must be fully informed about all decision-making. It is unacceptable that those who pay to attend a match conclude that the experience is worse than watching at home.”

It is one of the major bugbears of the system as it currently stands. Minutes can go by while a VAR check takes place, which can kill the atmosphere.

Putting them on the big screens at the Emirates would certainly help matters, but it remains to be seen if any changes will be made by the Premier League going forward.
