Arsenal should not consider selling Welbeck to Everton

Arsenal are now just days away from commencing the new Premier League season with the hosting of Leicester City at the Emirates Stadium but a wealth of speculation remains on the transfer front, where we could still see pieces of incoming and outgoing business.

Arsene Wenger has already bolstered his first-team with the addition of Sead Kolasinac and Alexandre Lacazette but the long-serving French boss is continuing to eye further recruits before the transfer window slams shut at the end of August.

The Gunners are reportedly eyeing the services of Monaco ace Thomas Lemar and OGC Nice midfielder Jean Michael Seri, although further signings are only likely to go ahead once the North London giants trim their squad of deadwood.

A host of players are linked with an exit from the Emirates Stadium this month, including Mathieu Debuchy, Kieran Gibbs and Lucas Perez, but players like Olivier Giroud, Alexis Sanchez and Laurent Koscielny are stars Arsenal intend to keep.

Another player linked with an exit in recent days is England international Danny Welbeck, as The Mirror state Everton are looking to splash £30m on the striker as they seek to replace the void in their squad left by Romelu Lukaku’s move to Manchester United.

That would give Arsenal a profit on the £16m they paid for Welbeck previously but a departure of the 26-year-old forward would be the wrong decision from Wenger’s side, particularly as an array of injury issues have meant the Gunners are yet to see the best from the striker.

Arsenal’s addition of Lacazette means that Welbeck will have a tough task securing first-team football this season, especially with Giroud and Theo Walcott to battle for a spot in the side. However, Arsenal’s involvement in the Europa League means that rotation is likely.

At his age, Welbeck is about to enter the prime years of his career and Arsenal should have learned to keep faith in injury stricken players after last year, where Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain bounced back from consistent issues to become a crucial part of Arsenal’s side.

It would take a lot for Welbeck to prove his worth but the fact that Alexis Sanchez has less than 12 months remaining on his contract leaves the door open for the former Red Devils forward to make a claim for the Chilean’s starting spot, if he goes, potentially leading the line or playing alongside Mesut Ozil and behind Lacazette.
