Arsenal should let Mesut Ozil leave, says pundit

It’s fair to say Mesut Ozil’s time at Arsenal has been littered with question marks about his desire to play for the club. The German signed for a then club-record fee of £42m back in 2013, and has been one of the Gunners’ highest earners ever since.

He has had his share of brilliant moments, where he has left fans in awe of his raw ability, but also his share of disappointment at the club. But these low moments are more often than not caused by his performances looking below par, with the midfielder often looking dejected and low on motivation at the Emirates.

Last season, Ozil looked increasingly likely to be leaving on a free transfer, before former manager Arsene Wenger awarded him with a new £350,000-a-week deal to keep him at the club.

Since then, the playmaker has rarely shown why he is worth being paid such a substantial amount – and fans are becoming increasingly fed up of his antics.

After this weekend’s game against West Ham, where Ozil was left out of the entire squad due to ‘illness’, manager Unai Emery has been called upon to sort the situation once and for all – by looking at selling the star.

And selling Ozil is a decision that has been backed by former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore, who says the German is a luxury player that Arsenal can’t afford as they look to restructure their team.

“Arsenal should let Mesut Ozil go at the end of the season because he is not the soldier Unai Emery is going to need,” he wrote in The Mirror.

“He requires more than technique from Ozil. Emery needs grinders and grafters.

“Players with less technique than him but more energy, heart and spirit.

“Ozil has coasted for the last two or three years and so have Arsenal.

“But Emery will have no intention of doing the same.

“They should sit down with him, shake his hand and say tell him he is a cracking player, but also a luxury player Arsenal can’t afford right now.”

Do you think Arsenal should sell Ozil?
