Arsenal are expected to hand captain Martin Odegaard a significant pay rise as a reward for his fine displays this campaign, according to reports.
The Norwegian international is currently earning a salary in the region of £100,000 a week on the four-year deal he signed when he joined the Gunners on a permanent basis at the start of last season.
However, after some outstanding performances in recent weeks, it is believed that the Premier League leaders are keen to offer Odegaard a bumper contract extension worth approximately £170,000 a week.
It would still not make him the club’s top earner, with Gabriel Jesus said to be taking home a wage of £265,000 a week, but it would be fitting recognition for the Norwegian playmaker‘s efforts this campaign.
Former Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna has been full of praise for Odegaard’s contributions and he has drawn similarities with some of his ex-teammates:
“Martin Odegaard reminds me of Cesc Fabregas, he has the same quality, but Odegaard also has the technique of Robin van Persie… Martin Odegaard had so much expectation coming from the Real Madrid academy, no one expected them to do so well.”
Whether Odegaard can reach Fabregas or van Persie’s level, we shall have to wait and see, but he is certainly playing his part in what could be a very memorable season.
