Arsenal Set To Lose Their Third Defender Since The End Of The Season

It seems Arsenal have a hard time holding on to their players. After the Gunners sustained a major blow after finding out Vermaelen is set to leave for Premier League rivals Manchester United, it seems that a third defender is looking to part ways with Wenger’s side. Monreal who has failed to become a team regular since moving to the UK, has always been a second choice. He was brought in as a back-up for Gibbs but something has prevented him from making his mark on Arsenal’s game.

Things might not be as bad as they look though. According to the Daily Express, Monreal could become part of a more complex deal which might involve French defender Aymeric Laporte. The Gunners have been linked to the promising defender for a while now but rumors were always cut down by Athletic Bilbao’s player who insisted he is satisfied with his situation at the club. Even though he has a buy-out clause which is considerable compared to what Arsenal could get for Monreal, the 20 year old defender still remains an interesting target.

Hopefully the entire rumor will be true and not just the first part. If Monreal decides to part ways with Arsenal and no swap is intended, the Gunners will have trouble putting together a competitive defensive line. It is hard to imagine what will happen when one of the four defenders currently chosen for the starting line-up picks up an injury.
