Arsenal will have to see off Atletico Madrid if they are to secure the signature of Bayern Munich midfielder Marcel Sabitzer, according to reports in the German media.

The Austrian international only moved from RB Leipzig last summer but he has struggled to make an impact at the Allianz Arena, having made just eight starts in all competitions.

With Bayern already looking to bring in Ryan Gravenberch from Ajax, there could be even fewer opportunities for Sabitzer next season so his current club are believed to be willing to listen to offers for the player.

A €15m (£12.5m) fee may be all that is needed to sign the 28-year-old, which certainly won’t be an issue for the Gunners, who are desperately short of options in the middle of the park.

An attempt was made to sign Juventus’s Arthur on loan in the January transfer window but the move for the Brazilian collapsed. A new midfielder, therefore, will be a key priority for manager Mikel Arteta ahead of the summer.
