Arsenal Quiet Over Berbatov Interest

According to the Independent, Fulham have confirmed to the media that Arsenal have not contacted the club over a potential move for striker Dimitar Berbatov, who has been struggling for consistent form ever since his move from Manchester United.

Arsene Wenger has remained mysterious about his plans for this window, but it seems the club will surely try and sign a player before the end of the window. With Theo Walcott’s long term injury, the Gunners have been over dependent on Olivier Giroud and the rest of the midfield for the goals. With the club leading the Barclays Premier League into the weekend and maintaining the position after beating Fulham on Saturday, Wenger will know the importance of having squad depth in the second half of the season. However, this transfer could go down to the wire just like Wenger’s signing of Mesut Ozil last summer.

Berbatov’s career in the Premier League has unfortunately been in decline since his arrival at Manchester United. The Bulgarian striker first proved his mettle in the league by signing for Tottenham Hotspur from Bayer Leverkusen in 2006. In two seasons, he impressed the top four with his intricate skill on the ball, and was signed by United in 2008. Even though his first years were successful, his laid-back style of play did not suit then manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who was trying to instill a hardworking philosophy in his side. He eventually moved to Fulham in 2012 where he was later joined by former assistant coach at United – Rene Maulensteen. Wenger is a fan of Berbatov’s but not enough to make a move seemingly.
