Arsenal pipped to post by Liverpool as Reds land Fabinho

Arsenal made a late attempt to sign Fabinho before he joined Liverpool from Monaco, according to reports from Sky Sports.

The Brazilian agreed a deal yesterday to join Liverpool on July 1st, ending his three-year spell in France in which he helped Monaco lift the Ligue 1 title in 2016/17.

Liverpool will pay £39.3m (€45m) plus a maximum of £4.3m (€5m) in add-ons for the 24-year-old.

However, it could have been Arsenal who instead landed the Brazilian midfielder.

The Gunners reportedly made an approach to Monaco for Fabinho over the weekend, however the Brazilian had already decided he was to join the Champions League finalists.

After completing his Liverpool switch, Fabinho revealed his delight to have joined Jurgen Klopp’s side.

“I am really excited about this move,” Fabinho told Liverpool’s official website. “This is something that I always wanted – this is a giant of a team. The infrastructures of the club look exceptional.

“A football club of this size coming after my services, I didn’t have to think that much about coming over. I will try to create my own history at this football club. Hopefully, on a personal level, I’m able to win titles with this club.

“I will try to grow and learn and improve myself, and to be part of the club’s history.”

Arsenal’s attempt to sign Fabinho means it is now the second time manager Unai Emery has missed out on landing the Brazilian.

Emery tried to sign Fabinho last summer whilst in charge of PSG, however the 24-year-old opted to instead remain at Monaco.
