Arsenal are now in “position” to sign Lille centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes, according to France Bleu Nord. The French radio station claims the Gunners have now edged ahead of the likes of Napoli for the Brazilian.

Manchester United, in particular, have been heavily linked with the 22-year-old in the past few days, with some reports even suggesting that the Red Devils had tabled a formal bid.

Chelsea and Everton have also been mentioned as possible destinations for Gabriel in recent weeks, but it appears Mikel Arteta’s side are now the favourites for his signature.

It would be a surprise signing, considering the club have seven senior centre-backs currently on their books, but the London club’s defence is in desperate need of an overhaul.

Arteta is very keen on having one left-footed and one right-footed centre-back to help with passing out from the back. Pablo Mari was brought in from Flamengo to help with that, but the left-sided Gabriel could also be another option they are considering.
