Martin Keown Backs Arteta To “Pick” Pacey Forward To Start Against Spurs To Exploit Key Weakness

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown believes Gabriel Martinelli will start against Tottenham on Sunday afternoon.

Spurs had issues with Newcastle exploiting their high line in their last fixture, which ended in a 4-0 defeat earlier this month, and Keown says he believes manager Mikel Arteta may use Martinelli’s speed to catch out their opponents:

“Arteta may pick Gabriel Martinelli to make his first Premier League start in nearly two months. His pace could be vital on the left alongside the speed of Bukayo Saka on the right, and they will be capable of latching on to Martin Odegaard’s balls in behind.”

Martinelli’s recent form has been rather poor but Keown’s reasoning does seem sensible. If, as expected, Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou does start his defence high up the pitch, the Gunners will need pace to ensure they make the most of the space in behind.

It would be harsh to leave Trossard on the bench

Considering Leandro Trossard scored the crucial opening goal in the win over Chelsea on Tuesday night, the Belgian would feel hard done by if Arteta does decide to drop him.

The winger has been one of Arsenal’s most consistent performers in recent weeks, and his finishing has probably been the best of any of the forwards.

Martinelli has to step up to the plate for Arsenal

It’s fair to say that the Brazilian international has had a very disappointing season by his own high standards. 8 goals in all competitions is a very poor return.

Martinelli’s ability to put away chances has let him down at times but he does still offer a lot from the left wing even if he hasn’t been on the scoresheet as often as he would have liked.

If the 22-year-old can pose a threat in behind against Spurs this weekend, it could prove crucial to securing a vital three points in the North London derby.
