Arsenal recorded a superb result against PSV in the Champions League with a 7-1 demolition of the Dutch side.
The Gunners took the lead after 18 minutes via Jurrien Timber, which opened the floodgates to six more goals. They netted two more times before half time, and then scored four in the second half, including a double from Martin Odegaard.
It has left them all but qualified for the quarter-final of the Champions League ahead of the home leg at the Emirates next week. They will play against either Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid in the next round of the competition.
Ahead of the game, Mikel Arteta outlined his plan for the team, and his words came to fruition in what was a perfect prediction of how his players would perform.
He said in his pre-match press conference: “If we work on certain things in training, they will happen in games and we will score goals from them.
“We have been much more consistent [In the Champions League], we have scored a lot of goals, we have conceded hardly anything, I think we have conceded three goals and the lowest expected goals [against] in the group stage which is great.
“So that’s a big platform, so we have those resources at the disposal of the team, it’s something the team has already done and now we have to continue to do it.”
Arsenal record historic Champions League win against PSV
The Arsenal boss predicted goals and he certainly got that right. Arsenal netted seven times for the first time since 2012, when they beat Newcastle United 7-3 in the Premier League.
Furthermore, it is the first time in the club’s history that they have scored seven goals in a Champions League game, becoming one of the biggest wins in the competitions history.
They are just the second team to score seven goals or more in the Champions League this season, as Bayern Munich netted nine in a 9-2 win against Dinamo Zagreb in September in the group stage.
