Mikel Arteta Hints At Who He Will Start Up Front For Arsenal As He Makes “Headaches” Admission

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta will have a selection dilemma this weekend as the club does not have a fit striker.

Kai Havertz suffered a season-ending hamstring injury which means that Arteta does not have any players who can play in the striker position.

Gabriel Jesus suffered an ACL injury earlier in the season, and with Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka still out, the Arsenal boss will have to experiment with his front three.

He will likely play Raheem Sterling, Leandro Trossard and Ethan Nwaneri up top, but he has not yet said which player he will choose to play as a striker.

The Gunners face a game against Leicester City this weekend, in which he will need to make significant changes to his starting XI – click here to see what we predict the Arsenal boss will do with his lineup.

Arteta hints that he could play Leandro Trossard up front for Arsenal

In his pre-match press conference, Arteta was aked about which player he would use to replace Havertz, and he hinted that it could likely be Belgian winger Leandro Trossard.

He said: “That’s the challenge ahead. I love it and look forward because we are still where we are with all the things I mentioned on top of playing four times with 10 men. We’ve been through a lot and we have sustained the level of performance and results until this point, so we are more than capable of doing it.”

Firstly, Arteta said that Ethan Nwaneri has been doing well as a winger and attacking midfielder, making it seem as though he doesn’t plan on moving the 17-year-old up front.

“He’s [Nwaneri] been playing as an attacking midfielder and on the right wing and I think it’s been really good in that position, so that’s fine.

“[Raheem] has been much more involved recently on merit and he’s earned the right to do so. It’s for other players as well, and for Leo [Trossard] to probably play in two or three different positions.”

Mentioning that Trossard can play in different positions perhaps indicates that Arteta trusts the Belgian winger to play up front this weekend.

“There are certain things that we’re going to have to adapt,” he added, “and it brings other opportunities because we’re going to have a different frontline of players that are very unpredictable, so good in 1-v-1s, very creative, very sharp. It’s going to give different headaches to the opposition.”
