Ian Wright has named an Arsenal player who has helped to make striker Viktor Gyokeres effective this season.
The Gunners are currently top of the Premier League table heading into their next game against Chelsea, five points clear of rivals Man City, who face a game against Leeds this weekend.
Mikel Arteta’s side come off a 4-1 win against Tottenham in the North London derby, and it was a simply dominant display from the Gunners. Two of Arsenal’s goals came from Eberechi Eze, who scored at hat-trick in the reverse fixture.
The other two came from Viktor Gyokeres, who has really improved in recent weeks, with his current goal tally for the Premier League up to 10 goals, which is the same as Liverpool’s Hugo Ekitike.
Wright says Eze has helped to improve Gyokeres
After the North London derby win, Arsenal legend Ian Wright has praised Gyokeres, but he suggested that one of the reasons why his form has improved is when he plays alongside Eze, who is more of a difference maker in the Arsenal attack.
Wright said on the Overlap: “I have to say that Tottenham were pretty poor with how they tried to mark him. But, when you look at Gyokeres, it’s the finishing, and how quickly he can get it down and finish it. When he’s got someone like Eze close, and he can pick out one of the defenders, the weakest one, he can be very effective.”
Based on Gyokeres’ recent form, especially against Spurs, Wright believes that he can become a crucial player for the Gunners during the run-in, as Arsenal are still competing in all four major competitions.
Wright added: “I did say [at the start of the season] that he can score between 10 and 12 [goals]. If he carries on now, I believe that he could probably get more, and every single goal is so important to him now with Arsenal in all four competitions.
“There’s something about it [his goal against Spurs] which was really clean, and obviously with Chelsea coming up, you’d hope he will get the same kind of space. If he can get the 15 or 16 goals, he will be a hit for Arsenal.”
