Former Premier League star Gary Lineker has said that we “might” have a title race brewing between Arsenal and Liverpool this season.
The Gunners got back to winning ways this weekend with a 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest, in Ange Postecoglou’s first game in charge of the Reds. Mikel Arteta will be delighted after four games, winning three of the four, and currently standing second in the league table.
During the game against Forest, many of Arsenal’s new signings made a big impact. Martin Zubimendi scored twice, Viktor Gyokeres scored once, Eberechi Eze claimed an assist, and you could argue that Noni Madueke and Cristhian Mosquera were two of the best players on the pitch.
It is certainly encouraging for Arteta that his new signings have fit in well, and provides a lot of hope moving forward, especially considering that their next Premier League game is against Manchester City next weekend.
Lineker highlights new Arsenal signings in title race claim
Former Premier League striker Gary Lineker was very appraising of the Gunners after their 3-0 win, he said that the new signings looked good, and that Arsenal could be a huge threat to Liverpool’s hopes of defending their league title.
Lineker said on The Rest Is Football Podcast: “I think where they can be really encouraged is that the new signings have all hit the ground running haven’t they.
“Obviously Eze and Madueke, but also Zubimendi in midfield, and Gyokeres, three goals in his four games, just the start you want as a striker. Even though, prior to this game, they hadn’t been at their free flowing best, they hadn’t created that much. But, now, four games in you go ‘this is a squad now to be reckoned with’.
“We might have a bit of a title race on our hands this season. I don’t see Liverpool running away with it quite so comfortably as they did last season.”
The Gunners’ next game is in the Champions League against Athletic Bilbao, they will then focus on their Premier League clash against City at the Emirates next weekend.
