Alan Shearer and Jamie Carragher agree that Arsenal need to sign two players if they want to secure the Premier League title next season.
The Gunners have come up just short in the last two seasons and, speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Shearer says he believes that Mikel Arteta’s side can beat Manchester City to top spot with some minor tweaks:
“They definitely improved from the previous season, Declan Rice helped a lot. I think big things are coming for Arsenal. If they can get in two more top-quality [players] and add them to what they’ve already got, I think they could do it next season.”
Speaking separately to Metro.co.uk, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher shared the same sentiment, but he went into further detail about which positions Arsenal need to strengthen:
“I think they [Arsenal] need two players They need a left-back and I think they need a great attacker. Not necessarily a centre-forward. People keep saying they need a goalscorer. Sometimes you can have a goalscorer who plays wide.”
Who are Arsenal likely to sign this summer?
In terms of the positions that Carragher mentions, the Gunners have actually been linked with a left-back in recent days. Feyenoord’s Quilindschy Hartman is on the club’s radar but, due to a knee injury, he may only be targeted next summer.
Ajax’s Jorrel Hato is a player that the London club are looking at too, while Juventus’s Andrea Cambiaso has been scouted.
If we look at the forward targets, RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko is known to be on the shortlist, with the Slovenian international having a €65m (£55m) release clause in his contract. Other names such as Bologna’s Joshua Zirkzee and Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres could also be considered.
The club have been linked with a few midfielders as well, with the likes of Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes, Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi and Benfica’s Joao Neves having been watched.
