Arsenal need to stand firm and reject Chelsea’s Oxlade-Chamberlain advances

Arsenal have stood strong in the transfer market so far this summer as they insist their top players will not be sold but Arsene Wenger’s resolve is likely to be put to the test in the final weeks of the summer window.

Chelsea’s interest in Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is being widely reported and it’s suggested a £35m bid will be lodged to persuade Arsenal into a deal, which may be difficult to reject due to the fact that the England international has less than 12 months remaining on his current deal.

The former Southampton ace has now spent seven years in North London, making just shy of 200 appearances, but his years at Arsenal have been plagued by injury issues and it’s only recently that he’s become a mainstay in the side.

Oxlade-Chamberlain’s versatility last season proved to be decisive as he excelled in a wing-back role for the Gunners after Wenger adopted a three-man back-line, a role that he has continued at the start of this campaign.

However, the England ace sees his future in midfield and his playing opportunities are likely to be decisive in whether Oxlade-Chamberlain pushes for an exit or pens a new deal with the Gunners- though it will be difficult for Arsenal to offer central opportunities.

Wenger’s side boasts a plethora of talent in central midfield and it will take a lot for Oxlade-Chamberlain to push himself into the reckoning for a starting spot there. However, he could be presented with the opportunity to make a mark in the Europa League this season.

Crucially though, Arsenal simply must not consider selling Oxlade-Chamberlain to Premier League rivals Chelsea as it’s clear he would significantly improve Antonio Conte’s struggling side. Whether playing at wing-back or competing for a central role, Chelsea’s lack of squad depth means he’s likely to get plenty of football in West London.

Due to the fact that Arsenal and Chelsea are likely to be going head-to-head this season, Arsenal must not consider a move even if the £35m being mentioned is tempting. Of course, there is the risk that Oxlade-Chamberlain could leave for free next summer but the Gunners need to take it upon themselves to convince the Three Lions ace to remain at the Emirates Stadium.
