Arsenal Need To Spend Big To Create A Solid Spine With van Dijk, Drinkwater And Gueye The Men Who Could Do The Job

You can never ever call this Arsenal team boring. Incredible in attack, hopeless at the back, this is going to be a long old season for Arsene Wenger’s men. For a club historically synonymous with having a good defence, this class of 2017 is so fragile that it makes you wonder why Wenger continually fails to fix these issues in the transfer market.

Whilst Kolasinac is a welcome addition, Arsenal’s real problem is always in the centre, not only in defence but the holding midfielders as well. Better sides than Leicester would have racked up a cricket score against us on Friday night and it is something that Arsene needs to address in the final few weeks of the transfer window.

I am sure the likes of Tony Adams and George Graham were shaking their heads at the ease in which the club concedes goals on a weekly basis. It is clear that Steve Bould’s presence in the coaching staff is having no effect on defensive performances – something that is baffling to say the least. We all know that Wenger’s attacking philosophy is what it is, but the harsh reality is that we haven’t won a title – since the breakup of our fabled back four.

Unfortunately it is our defensive frailty that ultimately causes us issues throughout the season. It is frustrating looking up the other end of the Seven Sisters road and seeing how solid that Tottenham are, not only in defence, but were the league’s top scorers last season. This success was built with a backline of Rose, Alderweireld, Vertonghen and Wanayama – all who cost combined the same amount we paid for one signing Mustafi. They are just well drilled and it’s no coincidence that they were challenging for the title the last couple of seasons.

We have three weeks left to resolve such issues and we really need to dig deep into the transfer coffers to strengthen this defensive spine. Danny Drinkwater is a player of proven Premier League experience in that role; whilst Gueye at Everton will bring to the holding midfield everything that Xhaka doesn’t from a defensive perspective. At centre half we could look to bring in Virgil van Dijk who wants out at Southampton and already just these three additions we could start to resolve these mistakes that are costing us so dear.

Chelsea still could be in for Virgil van Dijk (and you can never discount Manchester United) but the Emirates is a pretty attractive proposition and Wenger a great manager to play for so you would hope you could win the Dutchman over. Drinkwater was also linked with Chelsea earlier in the window but a derisory £15million bid was dismissed by Leicester but he is an unsung hero who won the Premier League. Everton have to sell some players after all their buying so a good bid could see them do business for Gueye.

Personally I think they are the answers to our problems – I only hope Wenger does too.
