Arsenal need to ignore contract matters and live in the moment to beat Man City

Arsenal are an unsettled club right now, of that there is no doubt. But instead of worrying about the futures of Ozil, Sanchez and Wenger, they need to start living in the moment; The players, the fans, the club in general, everyone. If they don’t then the consequences for the future could be severe.

As it stands Arsenal are 7 and 9 points behind 4th place Manchester City and 3rd placed Liverpool respectively, with 1 game in hand on City and 2 on Liverpool. They are well in the race for the top 4, despite a disastrous few months by their standards.

The Gunners scrapped a 2-1 win away to relegation strugglers Middleborough last Monday, it wasn’t particularly pretty, but it was vital. The 3-points were what mattered, but they will need to play better if they are to haul in one or both of City and Liverpool. Everyone knows Arsenal are capable of more, they can play beautiful attacking football and sweep aside any team in the country when on form.

But that has been the problem, Arsene Wenger’s team have, in the last few months, looked a shadow of the side they were in the early stages of the season. It’s the distraction of looking too far ahead and worrying about the future that is costing them. Most fans are encapsulated in debate over Wenger’s future, and concerned about what Ozil and Sanchez will decide to do this summer. There needs to be focus on the task at hand, securing a top 4 finish for the 21st season in a row.

But it’s not just the hunt for a Champions League qualification spot that Arsenal have left to play for this season. The Gunners face Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-final on Sunday in what looks set to be a thriller. Debatably the two most technically gifted and talent-laden squads in the Premier League face-off at Wembley in a winner takes all affair.

Both teams look shaky in defence, and both teams have the attack to exploit this, add to that the wide-open spaces available when playing at Wembley, and it becomes hard not to expect a hatful of goals. The worry for Arsenal is they could be conceding plenty of these goals if they don’t focus fully in the here and now. City beat West Ham 5-0 and 4-0 in their two ties on a similarly big pitch at the Olympic Stadium. Guardiola spoke about the pitch size as having helped his side; Arsenal should take note of that.

The fans were brilliant the last time they played City in a 2-2 home draw at the start of the month; this isn’t something you often say of a game at the Emirates. The supporters lived in the moment then, and it’s time for the players to stand up and do the same. One huge result could really push the team on as the season draws to a close. It’s not too late for the Gunners to save this season yet.
