Arsenal need to eye alternative options after dead-end in pursuit of prime target

Arsenal are set for a big summer and the Gunners have made early moves on the market to bring Sead Kolasinac to the club on a free transfer, whilst Arsene Wenger is eyeing huge deals that can reignite his underperforming side.

Monaco starlet Kylian Mbappe is reportedly the prime target for Arsenal this summer after the 18-year-old’s fantastic breakthrough year with the French principality side, where Leonardo Jardim’s team stormed through the Champions League and won the Ligue 1 title.

A world-record fee has been mentioned in the perspective deals but Arsenal face a huge challenge in luring the teenager to the Premier League, as Monaco do not intend to sell and the Gunners face competition from the likes of Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.

French outlet L’Equipe state Arsenal’s stance towards a potential deal has dramatically shifted recently, with Wenger now said to be pessimistic in his chances of luring the French striker to North London- which means Arsenal will have to eye alternatives.

Lyon’s Alexandre Lacazette has been mentioned as a different option for the Gunners and Arsenal may now focus on a deal for the French striker- but Wenger needs to ensure he has other options in case a deal doesn’t materialise.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Karim Benzema, Andrea Belotti and Robert Lewandowski could all be options for Arsenal but it would take a mammoth sum to lure any of that quartet- and the same can be said for Lacazette, with Lyon holding firm on their demands.

Arsenal’s pre-season campaign begins in mid-July and Arsenal certainly need to have secured a top target before they embark on their tour of the Far East and Australia, allowing the new recruit to settle into the side ahead of the new Premier League season.

The Gunners also need to make a huge statement of intent with any deal for a new striker and it’s likely their club-record deal of £42.5m for Mesut Ozil in 2013 will be broken, which will show Arsenal are prepared to spend where necessary.

Missing out on Mbappe is a big blow but it’s also hardly surprising for the Gunners, as it’s been clear that the best course of action for the young striker is to remain with Monaco for at least one more year- as he pushes towards a spot in Didier Deschamps’ World Cup side next summer.

A final decision is reportedly set to be made after Mbappe finishes international duty with Les Bleus this week but it seems there won’t be any moves for the striker.
