Arsenal need to be careful with who they allow to leave this month

Arsenal’s final month of the summer transfer window is set to be a busy period for the Gunners, after Arsene Wenger confirms he intends to trim down his large squad before the window slams shut.

The North London giants have been left with a squad that’s over 30-strong despite the exits of Wojciech Szczesny and Adam Lallana, due to the arrivals of Alexandre Lacazette and Sead Kolasinac, as well as the promotion of youth prospects.

Arsenal need a squad that boasts significant depth if they’re to balance their Premier League campaign with Europa League involvement but it’s true that the current crop of players is too large to deal with.

Lucas Perez, Carl Jenkinson, Kieran Gibbs and Mathieu Debuchy are amongst the players likely to leave, and it’s difficult to find someone who will argue that quartet still has a part to play at the club, but potential exits for the likes of Jack Wilshere and Calum Chambers need to be handled carefully.

Wilshere’s position is uncertain due to the fact he has less than 12 months remaining on his contract and his regular injury problems have seen him slip way down the pecking order. Whilst that makes it difficult to see a future for the England international at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal should not be hasty.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is another who has struggled with injury problems in recent seasons but he proved his worth towards the back-end of last year’s campaign, establishing himself as a key-part of Wenger’s new set-up. Therefore, Arsenal should try to give Wilshere another year.

Defender Calum Chambers has a similar situation, minus the injury troubles, as the past few years has seen the England ace slip down the pecking order following the arrivals of Shkodran Mustafi and Rob Holding.

Spending last season on-loan at relegated Middlesbrough, Chambers’ will certainly find it difficult to secure regular opportunities with Arsenal this season. However, the fact that Per Mertesacker is retiring at the end of the campaign is significant and Arsenal don’t have a good injury record.

A few injuries or suspensions in the first-team defensively could thrust Chambers back into the limelight and the 22-year-old can still be a useful asset for the Gunners moving forward, potentially playing centrally in a back-three or providing an alternative to Hector Bellerin on the right.

Suggestions indicate that Arsenal will negotiate a buy-back clause into any deal taking Chambers away from North London, which would be beneficial, but the Gunners need to consider their options.
