Arsenal need further signings if they’re to challenge for the Premier League

Arsenal have made great strides during the summer transfer window by bolstering their squad with the additions of Sead Kolasinac and Alexandre Lacazette, the latter of which arrived in North London for a club record fee- eclipsing the figure the Gunners paid in 2013 for Mesut Ozil.

The additions of Kolasinac and Lacazette give Arsenal further depth in key areas, with their new French striker finally giving the Gunners the top-class name in attack that fans have craved ever since Robin Van Persie moved to Manchester United.

Kolasinac, meanwhile, gives Arsenal a versatile player who is capable of excelling on either the left side of defence or centrally in a back-three, though it’s more likely he’ll adopt a wing-back position in Arsenal’s new set-up.

The pair provide a massive boost for Arsenal but an assessment of their squad shows there is still areas that need to be improved, particularly in the centre of defence and in central midfield- and that’s without taking the potential losses of Alexis Sanchez and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain into account.

Arsenal’s current central defensive options consist of Laurent Koscielny, Shkodran Mustafi, Rob Holding, Gabriel Paulista and Per Mertesacker, whilst Nacho Monreal, Calum Chambers and the aforementioned Kolasinac can also play in that position.

However, with Mertesacker in his last year, Holding still relatively unproven and question marks remaining about Gabriel’s suitability, Arsenal’s options look short- especially if they’re to play with a three-man defence, with rotation expected for the Europa League.

Injury problems have also caused Arsenal massive problems in recent years and it’s likely they’ll encounter similar issues during the forthcoming campaign, which means the Gunners may find themselves short of options ahead of key fixtures. Will the Gunners challenge for the Premier League? The odds certainly are not making them favourites so they could be worth a flutter.

Back to the squad itself and the situation in central midfield is largely the same, as Arsenal’s senior options consist of Aaron Ramsey, Granit Xhaka, Mohamed Elneny, Francis Coquelin, Jack Wilshere, Santi Cazorla and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain; though question marks surround the future of Wilshere and Oxlade-Chamberlain, whilst Elneny has also been linked with a summer transfer.

Cazorla’s long-term injury will also hit Arsenal hard in this area and the potential loss of Alexis further forward could lead to a reshuffle, potentially seeing Ramsey move further forward to be utilised in a similar role to which he occupies for the Welsh national side.

Without new additions in these areas, Arsenal may find themselves short during key periods of the forthcoming campaign and it could severely affect the Gunners’ competitiveness. A wealth of names continue to be linked to Arsene Wenger’s side and fans will be hoping that the French boss makes further movement in the market.
