Arsenal are among the teams “involved” in the battle to sign AZ Alkmaar captain Teun Koopmeiners, according to Il Mattino.

The Italian newspaper claims that the favourites, Atalanta, have dropped out of the race for the 23-year-old, with the Gunners, Napoli, Rennes and Roma being potential alternative options.

Koopmeiners’ asking price is said to be €20m (£17m), and that has reportedly led to Atalanta pursuing other targets, but it shouldn’t be an issue for Arsenal, who could receive a similar amount for Granit Xhaka.

The London club are said to be pursuing other midfielders as well but Sassuolo’s Manuel Locatelli (£34m), Wolves’ Ruben Neves (£35m) and Real Betis’s Guido Rodriguez (£26m) are thought to be more expensive.

Koopmeiners is an extremely adaptable player. He can play either as a holding midfielder or at centre-back, whilst he is a set-piece specialist and penalty taker. Whether the Gunners will firm up their interest in the Dutchman, we shall have to wait and see.
