Mohamed Elneny of Arsenal has signed a new contract that will last until the summer of 2024, scoring to journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter.

Elneny is currently Arsenal’s longest serving senior player, having been signed by Arsene Wenger and with the club since 2016, when he joined the Gunners from Swiss outfit Basel.

During his time in North London, Elneny has been mainly used on a rotational basis – he has rarely been an established starter for the Gunners. Nevertheless, he has also been a reliable option to call upon when needed.

A clean passer with plenty of energy and solid defensive fundamentals, Elneny is not a flashy player by any means – but he’s nevertheless effective in his role. Generally, he plays as a defensive midfielder, but can also be played in the box-to-box role.

The Egyptian has had minimal game time this season, though this can be attributed mainly to his rotten luck with injuries. After recovering from a thigh problem, Elneny was struck down again by a knee injury and has been out of action ever since.

In an interview on Arsenal’s official club website, Elneny said: “I’m so happy, I love this club and our supporters so much and I’ll give everything to help us be the best we can be, every day I’m here.

“It makes me so proud to have represented this amazing club since 2016. The spirit and togetherness we have in our squad right now is so positive and I’m so happy I have extended my contract.”
