Arsenal Looking Seriously At Sagna’s Possible Replacement

Arsenal’s first-choice right-back Sagna, will enter into the final year of his contract next season, and has so far struggled to reach to an agreement regarding his current contract with Arsenal. Therefore, sections in the media suggest that the defender does not see his long-term future with the Gunners, and is possibly weighing up a move away from the London club.

It is a given that if this rumor is true, Arsenal would be prepared to sell him in the summer and earn whatever amount possible rather than to keep him for his final year, and lose him for nothing at the end of next season once he becomes a free agent.

The French national joined Arsenal back in 2007 from Ligue 1 outfit Auxerre, and has become an integral part of the team over the years. The 30-year old is currently the first-choice right-back for his country too.

It has not been an easy road for Sagna in recent seasons, as he suffered two broken legs last year, which kept him out for considerable periods of time. He has also been unlucky with niggling injuries this season, which have seen him being sidelined for a week or two every now and then. He is currently out with an injury, and will miss Sunday’s North London derby against Tottenham.

Arsenal brought in unknown 19-year old youngster Carl Jenkinson at the beginning of last season from Charlton Athletic as cover for Sagna. He was thrust into the midst of action, and had a sometimes forgettable debut season at Arsenal. This season, however, he has managed to somehow find his feet in the top flight of the game. Arsene Wenger feels that the 20-year old Jenkinson is still too young to fill the boots of Sagna on a full-time basis. Therefore, the boss has asked his scouts to look for a capable replacement.

The name of Dutch international Daryl Janmaat has been doing the rounds off late in the British media. The 23-year old, currently at Dutch club Feyenoord, is enjoying a breakthrough season, and has attracted the attention of a host of top clubs across Europe, including Arsenal’s opponents on Sunday, Tottenham.

However, the right-back was coy when quizzed about any truth in links with Arsenal. “Arsenal’s interest in me? I’m only thinking about Feyenoord right now,” Janmaat told Voetbal International.

“Much remains to be played this season before thinking about the transfer market at the end of the season.”

Seems like Janmaat is completely focused on helping Feyenoord achieve success this season, before speaking about a possible summer switch. He may be on his way to Arsenal, he may not. However, this rumor is not likely to die down in the coming weeks as the longer it takes for Arsenal to reach an agreement with Sagna the more seriously they will be watching Janmaat and the more the story will grow. We will keep you posted on the latest developments with this story.
