Arsenal are changing their transfer policy during this summer transfer period with some serious investments ready to be made. Important funds will come from signing a new sponsorship deal and also from a transfer “kitty”.
If things go as expected, Arsenal will be looking to strengthen each and every department of their team, as they really have struggled to find a consistent winning line-up for the 2012-2013 season. The team was rarely complete with key players having to be left out because of injuries, especially during the last part of the season. A key factor in what is to come, transfer wise, refers to weather the Gunners will manage to get a place in next year’s Champions League. With only a few fixtures left out of this year’s Premier League, Arsenal are not certain of their place in the top four teams.
Arsenal should proceed with an aggressive transfer policy however, even if they do miss out on qualification to the Champions League. One of the first moves Wenger should make at the end of the season is to sign a new goalkeeper.
Three important keepers would be a big improvement for the Gunners. Either of the two Spanish keepers of Reina and Valdes are seen as the perfect replacement for Wojciech Szczęsny, but it seems another quite credible name has emerged. Hamburg SV’s 28 year old Rene Adler is possibly looking to move to the next level and Arsenal is one destination that he could be really keen on pursuing. Adler arrived at Hamburg on a free transfer from Bayer Leverkusen and has had an excellent season quickly establishing himself as his new team’s number one goalie and also being recalled to the German national side. This shows just how much the keeper’s stock has risen again of late as Adler was originally selected as Germany’s Number One goalkeeper for the World Cup in South Africa in 2010 but a serious injury robbed him of the opportunity and he had been overlooked for the national team ever since until his form this season made him be brought back into the international fold.
Wenger, of course, had Jens Lehmann as his keeper for many years (including as the keeper of the “invincibles”) so he clearly likes the temperament of German keepers even if Lehmann was somewhat eccentric to say the least so a move for Adler is certainly conceivable and I think it is just the kind of move Wenger could make as the price would be right and by all accounts Adler is an exceptional keeper.
The other two names look harder to sign even though Adler is under contract until 2017. Reina has been with Liverpool for a long time and he is more likely to want to return to his homeland with a possible move to Barca depending on what happens with Valdes who may be posturing for a better deal with Barca by threatening to leave and he could prove to be too expensive for Wenger’s tastes at the reported £10-12 million fee anyway. I think Adler looks like he is seriously under-rated -if he was keeping Manual Neuer out of the German national side before his injury then he must be some kind of keeper. I think the Gunners should make a move for him what do you think?
