Arsenal Look To Prise Away Martinez After Stalling Bender Deal

Arsene Wenger is looking to reinforce his central midfield options for next season and has identified a possible list of candidates who can do a job in the centre of the pitch.

At the top of the list is Borussia Dortmund’s Ilkay Gundogan, but that move is now off the cards after the German club announced an extension for their star midfielder last week. Arsenal believe German international Lars Bender is their more realistic option, although the 25-year-old has five years remaining on his contract and could command a sizable fee.

However, Wenger is not pressing ahead with a deal after learning that Munich’s Martinez could be unhappy at the club. The Arsenal manager wanted to bring in the Spaniard as a direct replacement for Alex Song in 2012 but Bayern were ahead of Arsenal at that time.

If he were to be made available by the Bundesliga champions, Wenger would prioritise a move for the former Athletic Bilbao midfielder, as reported by the Daily Mail.

The Gunners have also been linked with a move for Southampton’s French midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin. Even former players Cesc Fabregas and Alex Song have been mooted for a return to the Premier League.

Which of these internationals do you think Arsene Wenger should make a move for in the summer?
